Road Travel

Sale is an easy 2.5 hours drive from Melbourne on the Princes Highway and accessed by a dual lane freeway that extends from Melbourne to Traralgon. The remaining distance to Sale (55 kilometres) is programmed to be upgraded to dual carriageway in the near future.

Forty minutes on the Melbourne side of Sale is Traralgon, the largest town in the Gippsland region with a population of 28,000. It is part of the City of Latrobe which is the third most populous regional city outside Melbourne. Traralgon, like Sale, has a range of high order services in retail, medical and public transport which generate a large number of employment opportunities. A workers' bus service has recently been introduced to facilitate travel for the many commuters who travel to work in the Latrobe Valley each day.
Bairnsdale, forty minutes to the north of Sale on the Princes Highway is the home of food giants Patties (Four and Twenty) and One Harvest as well as a range of retail, manufacturing and transport industry companies.
Two hours (135km) further north is the town of Cann River where the Princes Highway intersects with the Monaro Highway. Canberra is three and a half hours, (290km) along the Monaro Highway.  Sydney is six hours (575 km) north on the Princes Highway.

Public Transport

There are three return train services between Sale and Melbourne daily,
with an hourly service between Melbourne and Traralgon on weekdays
With the continuing increases in patronage, Wellington Shire is confident the number of rail services on the Sale Traralgon-Melbourne line will be expanded and is actively pursuing this with the State Government. The return fare from Melbourne is only $20.40 for students and $40.80 full fare.
